What is radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable treatment that can provide immediate structural support while also stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse is made with calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. The gel provides initial volume and support, while the CaHA particles act as a scaffold that encourages gradual tissue remodeling over time.

This combination makes Radiesse a versatile treatment for patients seeking improvement in facial contour, volume loss, and skin quality.

How Does Radiesse Work?

Radiesse has both an immediate and a longer-term effect.

When injected conventionally, the gel carrier provides immediate correction and structural support. Over time, the gel is absorbed while the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres stimulate production of collagen and elastin within the treated tissue.

As the Radiesse material is gradually metabolized, the newly formed extracellular matrix contributes to continued improvement in the quality and support of the tissue.

This biostimulatory effect distinguishes Radiesse from fillers designed primarily to provide temporary volume.

Traditional vs. Hyperdilute Radiesse

Radiesse can be used differently depending on the treatment goal.

Traditional Radiesse

When used in its conventional form, Radiesse provides immediate volume and structural support while also stimulating collagen production.

This approach may be selected when facial contour or volume restoration is a primary goal.

Hyperdilute Radiesse

Radiesse can also be diluted with sterile saline and anesthetic and distributed more broadly through selected tissues. In this hyperdilute form, the emphasis shifts away from creating focal volume and toward biostimulation and improvement in skin quality.

Hyperdilute Radiesse may be considered for selected areas where improving skin firmness, texture, and laxity is the primary goal.

Radiesse vs. Sculptra

Radiesse and Sculptra are both biostimulatory injectables, but they are not interchangeable.

Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite and can provide immediate structural support in addition to stimulating collagen and elastin. It can also be hyperdiluted when biostimulation rather than volume is the primary objective.

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and works primarily by stimulating gradual collagen production. Its effects develop progressively rather than providing the same type of immediate structural correction.

The best choice depends on your anatomy, degree of volume loss, skin quality, treatment area, and desired result. In some patients, different biostimulatory treatments may even have complementary roles within a broader treatment plan.

Radiesse vs. Hyaluronic Acid Filler

Traditional dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane® are generally composed of hyaluronic acid and are particularly useful when precise, immediate volume or contouring is desired.

Radiesse also provides immediate correction when used conventionally, but its calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres provide an additional biostimulatory effect.

Another important difference is that hyaluronic acid fillers can generally be dissolved with hyaluronidase if necessary. Radiesse cannot be dissolved in the same way, which makes careful patient selection, treatment planning, and injection technique particularly important.

Neither approach is universally better. The appropriate product depends on the area being treated and the desired outcome.

What to Expect During Radiesse Treatment

Your appointment begins with an assessment of your anatomy, skin quality, volume loss, and treatment goals.

Radiesse is then injected strategically according to the treatment plan. The amount of product, depth of placement, and technique vary considerably depending on whether Radiesse is being used for structural correction or in a more dilute biostimulatory approach.

Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising can occur after treatment. Your provider will provide specific post-treatment instructions based on the area and technique used.

Radiesse Results

When Radiesse is used for structural correction, some improvement is visible immediately after treatment.

Its biostimulatory effects develop more gradually as collagen and elastin production occurs within the treated tissues. When Radiesse is used primarily for skin-quality improvement, changes therefore develop progressively rather than appearing all at once.
