Sclerotherapy is considered the medical treatment of choice used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins.  The treatment is minimally invasive. The procedure also can improve related symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning and night cramps. Treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take up to two months to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed.

It may take up to 6 weeks for treated veins to improve. The appearance immediately after can often look worse prior to treatment. We recommend scheduling a follow-up visit about a month after the procedure to check the procedure’s success and decide whether further sessions are needed. Generally, you need to wait about six weeks before undergoing another sclerotherapy session.

Veins that respond to treatment generally don’t come back, but new veins may appear.

Yes, the contraindications for Sclerotherapy include:

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Allergy to Asclera (polidocanol)

Patients with varicose veins more than 3 mm in diameter

Patients with a history of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, pulmonary embolism, acute vein or blood clotting disease.

Patients that had a recent major surgery (within 3 months)

Patients with open wounds or infection in the treatment area

Patients that have experienced a previous adverse reaction to sclerotherapy or vein removal treatment.

Patients who have medical conditions that may affect wound healing

Post treatment you can expect the following: Minor discomfort and mild itching are normal post treatment. Redness and swelling (with the appearance of “hives”) around the treated veins may last 1-2 days. This may be associated with some itching/burning and may improve with over the counter Benadryl or non-sedating antihistamines such as Zyrtec 10mg. Bruising around the treated area that should resolve in 1 week. Veins may temporarily become discolored (darker red, purple or brown) as they heal. Sun exposure and tanning beds can worsen the discoloration and may cause them to last longer or become permanent.

Complications, though rare, can occur and should be discussed and understood. The patient must understand the importance of the post care instructions, and that failure to comply may increase the potential for complications.

Anaphylaxis or allergic reaction to Asclera  (polidocanol)

Painful areas, expanding redness, blistering or unusual swelling or bruising

Visual disturbances, headaches, fainting and nausea

Injection site looks significantly red, hot or tender.

Pigmentary changes: hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur. There is a higher risk in darker skin types.
