BBL (BroadBand Light) is an intense pulsed light (IPL) device that targets pigment, sun-damage and superficial signs of aging. It promotes younger-looking skin. When treating pigment with the BBL, you can resume normal activities such as wearing makeup, working out, etc. within 24 hours. If you’re looking to treat rosacea, redness in the skin, or broken capillaries, we recommend refraining from exercise or alcohol for 72 hours. Your practitioner will provide you your specialized after care instructions post treatment.
BBL treatments range from 2-6 treatments and Halo usually 1-3 over the course of a year. Maintenance treatments are recommended. Consultations required to make sure you’re a good candidate, develop a customized treatment plan, and discuss pre-treatment to ensure your best result.

Forever Clear BBL

Avoid natural sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 weeks prior to treatment
Avoid self tanner, spray tan or any lotions that contain gradual tanners for 2 weeks prior to treatment
Patients with a history of cold sores should be taking antiviral medications(valtrex) for 5 days starting on the day prior to treatment
To decrease the risk of bruising, we recommend avoiding the following for 3 days prior to your treatment (unless medically contraindicated):
Herbal supplements: Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Garlic, Ginkgo, Ginseng
Any supplements or medication that increases the chances of blood thinning
We recommend pretreating the skin with nightly retinol for 30 days prior to treatment and discontinuing retinol 7 days prior to treatment.
Arrive to the office with the treatment area clean and free of makeup, lotions, creams or products prior to treatment.
Sunscreen (SPF 30+) with zinc oxide should be applied
every 2-3 hours for 3 days after treatment.
Mineral makeup can be applied immediately after treatment
Use a mild cleanser for 1-2 weeks (Cetaphil or product recommended by your provider) and a plain moisturizer (Cereve or ZO Hydrating Cream)
Do not pick, peel or rub treated areas as this may cause scarring. Aquaphor (or a product recommended by your provider) can be applied to dry areas.
Cool water compress or aloe gel can be applied to the treated area if desired.
Arnica gel or tablets can be used to reduce bruising
Avoid vigorous exercise, heat, saunas, hot tubs, swimming pools and sweaty activities for 48 hours
Avoid natural sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 weeks post treatment
If treated for rosacea: avoid alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine for 24 hours
Avoid exfoliating agents (retinoic acid, tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, etc) for 7 days.
Normal skin care regimen can resume in 7 days.
Do not receive additional skin treatments (lasers, microneedling, facial, etc) or any treatment in the treatment area for 2-4 weeks. Please discuss with your provider for a treatment plan.
Yes, the contraindications for BBL include:
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Recent sun exposure (in the last 2 weeks) or use of self tanners
Patients who have a history of abnormal response to sunlight
Patients who use photo-sensitizing medications or drugs
Patients who have used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the last 6-12 months
Patients who have medical conditions that may affect wound healing
Patients who use anticoagulant medication or heavy aspirin use
Patients with melasma
Patients with a history of skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma
Patients with a history of herpes simplex
Patients who have a history of keloid scar formation
Patient who are Skin Type VI
Neurotoxin injections in the treatment area in the last 2 weeks
Dermal fillers in treatment area in the last 30 days
Patients that have experienced a previous adverse reaction to an BBL treatment.
Post treatment you can expect the following:
Mild redness (may feel like a sunburn) that will subside in a few hours
Mild swelling in the first 24 hours
Freckles and sunspots may turn slightly darker (and have “coffee grinds” texture initially and then flake off within
7-10 days for facial areas and 14 – 21 days for body areas. This is a desired and normal reaction.
There may be redness and slight swelling around the treated vessels. Often, they appear lighter in appearance and
are less defined.
Sun spots, age spots, and or broken blood vessels begin to clear up in 1-2 weeks.
You can expect to see results in 1-2 weeks. The continued aging of your face and the exposure to natural and artificial light will affect how long your results last, but typically, you can expect results to continue to reveal themselves for a time period of about 6 months up to a year.
The number of treatments will depend on your skin and your desired results. Your provider will discuss and customize a treatment for your individual needs. Our providers recommend 4 treatments for BBL “Forever Young” (targets red and brown pigment) and 6 treatments for BBL “Forever Clear” (acne treatment).
Complications, though rare, can occur and should be discussed and understood. The patient must understand the importance of the post care instructions, and that failure to comply may increase the potential for complications.
Scarring, though rare, can occur following any intense light procedure.
Histamine/Hives: some patients develop raised urticaria similar to hives. This irritation usually subsides in a
Pigmentary changes: hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur. There is a higher risk in darker skin types.
Purpura, which is purplish bruising, may occur in the treated area and may appear to be the size and shape of the BBL crystal. These bruises may last for 1-2 weeks. Purpura usually results from having the pulse width too short and/or fluence too high during the treatment. Purpura could also occur from the concomitant use of anticoagulant medications.
Swelling around the eyes and bridge of nose may occur immediately after a BBL treatment and may remain for
